Vikram Bhatt’s Maya was one of the first webseries trailers that we showed on the website and we told you about how many people alleged that this was a straight off rip-off of the hit book and film series, 50 Shades of Grey. The Bhatt kept his silence on the issue for a while but has finally spoken about those allegations in an interview with itimes. Here is what he had to say when asked if the film was inspired by 50 Shades of Grey:
No. It’s not. Unfortunately, anything that is BDSM is ‘Fifty Shades of Grey;. And I see no point in fighting that perception. It’s like saying ‘Dangal’ is ‘Sultan’ because they are about wrestling.
Quite frankly, we are buying Bhatt’s words. After all, BDSM is a very touchy concept and there’s not many movies or fiction made about it. So, concepts are definitely going to overlap. Also, at the very outset, the film has a different story than Fifty Shades of Grey. In the English film, the characters sign up to experience BDSM. In Vikram Bhatt’s film, Shama Sikanadar plays a housewife who indulges in BDSM and then it all goes wrong. There’s not a single point where the scripts are similar. We do not know if any of the scenes are lifted from the series. We will be able to judge that only after the series launches.
Also, the concept of BDSM is not alien to India too. Many years ago, a prominent newspaper had made an explosive report about how people interested in India in BDSM used to meet in coffee shops. Some say that the group broke off but some of the individuals are quite active with each other, even if they have taken the action away from the Internet. So, it isn’t exactly a ‘copied concept’.
